The procurement process for the Northamptonshire Ophthalmology Service has been completed, with a contract awarded to Community Health and EyeCare by NHS Northamptonshire ICB. This falls under the industry category of health services, denoted by CPV code 85100000, and is classified as a service procurement. The contract adheres to the Health Care Services (Provider Selection Regime) Regulations 2023, with the procurement method designated as limited, implying an award procedure without prior publication of a call for competition.
The procurement was finalised on July 28, 2025, and will cover the 2025/26 financial year within the region identified by the code UKF24. The initiative, aimed at enhancing ophthalmology services within specified timeframes, follows the guidelines inclusive of NICE and NHSE standards. This tender creates significant openings for businesses specialising in healthcare services, particularly those offering advanced ophthalmic care and training.

Large enterprises like Community Health and EyeCare, with proven capabilities in delivering high-quality health services, particularly in regions such as the UKD45, will find such contracts beneficial for expanding their footprints and enhancing service delivery. The contract's emphasis on training future ophthalmologists presents additional avenues for entities focused on medical training and education sectors to engage and grow through collaborative efforts within the NHS service framework.
The service will provide an ophthalmology service for new referrals, providing consultant led pathways of care. Patients will be seen within the required Referral to Treatment timescales and where a follow up appointment is required for on-going management, these will be within national guidance and service standards (the service provided will reflect NICE guidance) by appropriately qualified, competent clinical practitioners.
