The procurement process led by the NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership-Procurement Services, hosted by Velindre University NHS Trust, involves the outsourcing of ophthalmology services. The contract is specifically for outsourcing cataract surgical procedures and related activities to assist the Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) in meeting Ministerial Targets. The procurement falls within the Health Services category under industry classification 85100000 and is focused around the Swansea area, specifically at the SpaMedica site in Swansea Enterprise Park.
The process utilised a limited procurement method completed on grounds of extreme urgency, with a direct award to SpaMedica Ltd under a framework agreement. The agreement's award was finalised on 1 May 2025, with services expected to commence immediately within the same month. This tender offers significant business opportunities, particularly for organisations experienced in healthcare service provision and urgent care frameworks.
Companies that can deliver timely and effective health services, especially in ophthalmology, stand to gain from similar future opportunities arising from the NHS or other health boards needing to reduce waiting lists. Although this particular procurement relied on an urgent, non-competitive process due to immediate patient needs, suppliers harnessing capabilities to respond rapidly to health sector demands and those specialising in supplementary medical services stand to benefit from networking with public sector health bodies for potential future tenders. SpaMedica's existing large-scale operations and experience may be well-suited for future expansions or similar outsourced healthcare service contracts.
