Understand first, then practise: how Hazelgrove Manor Care prepared for its CQC interview in six hours

Lilian had already built Hazelgrove Manor Care, a home care agency in Hatfield, and sent CQC her full application. She came to us for one thing: to be properly ready for her interview. We read every document she had submitted, then gave her six hours of one to one coaching in two phases, understanding first and practice second. She passed, and on 5 December 2025 CQC registered Hazelgrove Manor Care, with Lilian as registered manager.

6 Hours of CQC Interview Coaching. She Passed. (Hazelgrove Manor Care)

Collins from Care Sync Experts on Hazelgrove Manor Care: a founder with her application already in, six hours of one to one coaching in two phases, the Trustpilot review she left, and the CQC Interview Preparation Platform we have built since.

How do you prepare for a CQC interview?

Start with the documents you sent CQC, because CQC assesses them in detail and wants evidence of how you will meet the fundamental standards when it interviews you. Make sure you understand how your own policies and systems work in practice before you rehearse answers. Then practise out loud, with mock interviews and follow up questions. CQC may interview you by telephone, online or face to face.

Then and now: the same coaching, plus a platform for between sessions

When we worked with Lilian, everything was delivered through live one to one sessions and printed materials. It worked: she passed. Since then, we have been thinking about how to give clients even more support between sessions, in their own time. So we built the CQC Interview Preparation Platform, and every interview preparation client now gets access to it.

Where Lilian started: everything in, one step left

When Lilian came to us, she had already done the work. She had built her company, written her policies, put together her Statement of Purpose, her business plan and her operational documents, and sent her full application to CQC. The only thing left was the interview, the one that decides whether everything you have built gets approved.

Learn More

Six hours. Understand first, then practise.

We gave Lilian six hours of one to one coaching, scheduled around her availability. The way we used those hours matters more than the number. A lot of people jump straight into mock interviews and start rehearsing answers before they understand the material. Then the interview asks something they did not expect, and they freeze, because they were rehearsing, not understanding.

Public recordHazelgrove’s account of the work

Every key area, tied back to her own service

  • Safeguarding
  • Governance
  • Medicines management
  • Duty of candour
  • Quality assurance
  • Complaints handling
  • Recruitment

Before the first session

An onboarding call to collect everything she had submitted to CQC, and a proper read of every document: how her service was set up, how her processes worked, how her governance was structured and what her service model looked like.

  1. Phase 1

    Understanding the service first

Know your own service well enough to explain it under pressure.

    • Her roles and responsibilities as registered manager
    • Every key area CQC explores, from safeguarding to recruitment
    • Each topic tied back to her own policies, processes and service

She was not learning theory. She was learning how to talk about what she had already built.

  2. Phase 2

    Practise

Only once the foundation was there did the pressure start.

    • Full practice interviews
    • Realistic scenarios and tough follow up questions
    • Answers challenged, refined and built up until she was ready

The kind of pressure a real CQC interview can bring, before the real thing.

Between sessions

A set of interview materials to work through in her own time, at her own pace, so her confidence kept building between our sessions.

  • Rehearsing first

The answer sounds fine until the first follow up question. There is nothing underneath it to reason from, so you freeze.

  • Understanding first

Follow up questions are just more questions about your own service, and you already know your service.

Frequently asked questions

CQC says its registration assessment is rigorous and can take a few months. Before that, the DBS checks can take from around 14 days to up to 60 working days, depending on which CQC page you read. Breathe Care Services was formed in August 2025 and registered in March 2026.
No. CQC says it cannot process your application without the required DBS checks, and that until you have your certificate you will not be able to submit. Use the waiting time to build your supporting documents.
An enhanced DBS check with the right barred list information. If you are not a registered healthcare professional, it must be countersigned by CQC. CQC does not accept certificates from the DBS Update Service, and rejects applications with DBS checks over 12 months old.
Yes. Even though care happens in people’s homes, CQC needs details of your main office, where you will manage the service and keep records. It cannot be a PO box, it must be in England, and CQC may refuse an application if the premises are not suitable.
Yes, and at Breathe Care Services they are. The Registered Manager runs the service day to day. The Nominated Individual supervises how it is managed and must be a director, manager or secretary of the organisation. CQC says a registered manager can also act as nominated individual, normally where the organisation is small.
CQC does not publish a fixed list of interview questions, but its guidance says it expects home care managers to have experience with complaints, mental capacity assessments, safeguarding concerns and medication errors, and to understand the Health and Social Care Act 2008, its regulations and the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
CQC’s current home care guidance says to send your application only when everything is ready to start providing services, including completed DBS checks, your premises set up and your staff recruited.
CQC rejects it and emails you to explain why. You can correct and resend it, but it counts as a new application and does not keep its place in the queue. For home care agencies this has applied since 1 July 2025.
No. CQC says you must complete the application yourself. We help you build the supporting documents, check the pack before it goes in, and prepare your Registered Manager and Nominated Individual for assessment.
By law, the information set out in Regulation 12 and Schedule 3 of the Care Quality Commission (Registration) Regulations 2009. The service type and details on your application form should match it.
